All That Glitters

VD Candle Holder-5

I love glitter!

Do you remember glitter art projects when you were a kid? My recollections are that glitter projects were always done at school, and back then there was only red, green, gold or silver glitter to choose from. I, of course, had to use them all.

It wasn’t until I became a mom that I realized the wisdom of a glitter-free home. 😉 I felt the same way about play dough after trying to scrape the gooey or dry, crusty stuff out of carpet fibers. :(

But now (yippee!!) my boys are well past that stage and I can play work to my heart’s content. It was definitely worth the wait. There is now a rainbow of colors to choose from, there is a choice of textures, and the projects are much more sophisticated. Yep, that’s my story. It’s momma’s turn!

VD Candle Holder-1
I found a clear glass candle holder at the dollar store. Seriously, they have the best stuff to transform. You could also recycle one of those short, squatty olive jars.

I cut out little hearts on my Cricut Expression and stuck them to the candle holder. CHEAP TIP ALERT: Sign companies will sell scraps of sticky-backed vinyl for pennies. They usually have lots of colors to choose from (if you care what color it is) and it’s much cheaper than the sticky-backed vinyl you’re “supposed” to buy for your personal die-cutting machines.

VD Candle Holder-2
I covered the candle holder with decoupage medium.

VD Candle Holder-3
Since Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, out came the pink glitter.

Then I peeled off the hearts while the medium was still wet. Psst. You won’t be able to see the hearts on the outside of the holder, so locate them on the inside. Use a straight pin to pry up the edges. If the heart windows are kinda messy use a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol to clean your windows.

VD Candle Holder-4
I outlined each heart window with clear, dimensional glitter paint. It looks white when wet, but dries clear and…well,…glittery.

VD Candle Holder-5
Finishing touches included a ribbon tied around the neck and a tea light candle placed inside.

Enjoy!

I Made My Own Buttons-Oh Yes I Did!

Oh yes I did! I made my own “Grab My Button” for my blog and a clickable button for my Etsy shop.

I have been wanting to figure out how to make buttons for quite some time. It seems that every blog I follow has one, so I wanted one too. There’s a very special lady that helps me with all my techie questions, and quite honestly I wouldn’t have a blog without her, but I also know she has a lot on her plate. I decided to try to do this myself. I figured if I really screwed it up she would take pity on me. 😉 (Smooches to you, Michy.)

The thing that really pushed me forward was a link party at Homemaker on a Dime called Market Your Biz and Giveaways. Last week I came across it and decided I would have a button for my Etsy shop by this week. Guess what? She posted this weeks linky and I hadn’t done a thing about it all week. Go figure…

Now (ahem) with most things Google is my friend. Not so with button-making tutorials. I was sooo confused. I finally decided to chuck the tutorials and use what I had…and a little common sense. Two and a half hours later….again, TWO AND A HALF HOURS later I have successfully created a button image, a “Grab My Button” blog button and a button for my Etsy shop.

They are both in my sidebar, but a post with no images just won’t do, so here they are.

…And my beautiful Etsy button.

They even work! Go ahead and click on them. You know you want to. 😉

Stacked Wood Valentine Decor

VD Block Sign-5

In a household of guys it has sometimes been a challenge expressing my girly-girl personality. My favorite color is pink, and for some reason that color always gets shot down when suggested for room decor. Hmm...I am also in love with anything painted shabby chic, but hubby likes the look of real wood. (sigh) Over the years we have compromised (sort of), so we have a mix of both. The “look” isn’t as pleasing as I would like, so whole-room reveals will probably never be posted here. :(

We’ll see.

My last baby graduates this year, so soon I will only have to m̶̶a̶̶n̶̶i̶̶p̶̶u̶̶l̶̶a̶̶t̶̶e̶ convince my b̶̶i̶̶g̶̶g̶̶e̶̶s̶̶t̶ ̶b̶̶a̶̶b̶̶y̶ husband that my way is the best way. :) “Happy wife, happy life” and all that jazz...

Now holidays (more specifically Valentine’s Day), I can get away with pink AND shabby chic, mostly because the guys think it will soon be put away. Thing is, after all of these years Momma sometimes “forgets” and leaves out a few stray items. Funny how that works. 😉

If you have read this far in my ramblings, then you are probably wondering what any of this has to do with that photo at the top of this post.

Are you still with me?

Well, assuming you are, I will shamelessly post it again and get on with it.

VD Block Sign-5
This is my newest shabby chic (with touches of pink) Valentine’s Day decoration. Shh! Don’t tell my guys, but it may stick around for a little while.

VD Block Sign-1
I cut and sanded four pieces of scrap 2×2.

VD Block Sign-2
Painted them a pretty pink.

Painted over that with white.

Sanded for a little bit of shabby chic loving.

VD Block Sign-3
Glued the 2x2s together

…and added “love” words with letter tiles from a vintage game. I’m thinking Scrabble tiles would look pretty cute too.

VD Block Sign-4
For one last touch of girly-girl I wrapped lace trim around the decoration and tied it in a bow at the top.

Enjoy!
