Rustic Ruler Star

9-DSCN5558Rustic Ruler Star

I just love to repurpose, reuse and recycle ordinary items into something special. That’s why I got such a rush when I began cleaning out closets and realized I had an over abundance of wooden rulers. If you have kids, especially grown kids, school supplies seem to breed in the dark. A new year means new supplies, so you can’t reuse the old ones…even if they look identical to the year before…that’s the rule. 😉

2-DSCN5539I took five wooden rulers and sanded off the shiny finish.

The rulers already had a hole in one end.

I think that’s for hanging, but I’ve never managed to be that organized. Don’t judge me.

3-DSCN5542I drilled a hole in the other end of each ruler.

4-DSCN5544Then I stained them with ordinary brown acrylic craft paint. I painted it on and wiped it off with a paper towel. Messy? Yes, but less messy than regular wood stain. Craft paint cleans up with soap and water and doesn’t smell.

Do you remember the stars your teacher used to put on a really good paper? That’s the same way these stars are made. Well, sorta…

5-DSCN5548I cut rusty baling wire and attached two sets of two rulers in the shape of a “V”.

6-DSCN5550With one “V” vertical and one horizontal, I attached the end of two touching legs with more baling wire.

7-DSCN5553Then the last ruler was placed across the star and attached to the two remaining legs.

8-DSCN5557Quick and simple! My favorite way to craft!

Enjoy!

Canning Jar Canister

4-DSCN5529Canning Jar Canister

The idea for this canister was inspired by the candy jars in old fashioned general stores. I actually call this canister a “cracker” canister. My family (teenagers) seem to have a problem with closing opened boxes of crackers when they are done with them. They get stale so quickly.

2-DSCN5488Old weathered fence board provided the rustic heart lid.

3-DSCN5505I used household cement to attach the ring.

Tip: If you’re obsessed with the tip of the heart lining up with the front of the canister, screw the ring on the jar and place a mark on the front of it. Then when you glue the heart to the lid, line up the point with the mark. I’m usually not too worried about such things, but in this case it just looked better.

5-DSCN5532I think the knob provides the cuteness factor with this project. It’s just an old cupboard door pull. I painted it and sanded it a bit to marry it with the rustic charm of the canister.

4-DSCN5529That’s it! Fill it up with crackers and dare those teenagers not to put the lid back on.

Enjoy!

Chalkboard Restyle From “Art”

5-DSCN5473Shabby Chic Framed Chalkboard

1-DSCN5464I found this frame and painting in a free box at a yard sale. It had issues. The painting wasn’t even in the frame. I loved the frame’s shape, but the painting…not so much. I took both parts because the board fit the frame and I knew I could reuse it as something else.

2-DSCN5465A chalkboard is born. I flipped the board over and painted the back with chalkboard paint.

4-DSCN5470The frame color didn’t appeal to me either. I painted it white and sanded it to distress.

3-DSCN5469I loved the look when I finally put them back together. Since the painting was showing on the back I covered the back with brown paper. I also moved the hanger so that the longest area of the chalkboard was hanging horizontally.

6-DSCN5475I liked it, but it was a bit boring until I added a burlap bow.

5-DSCN5473Free art with a purpose!

Enjoy!

Americana Desk

6-DSCN5523It’s Spring!

Well, sorta. The calender says it’s spring, but Mother Nature can’t seem to make up her mind. Last week we actually had 80 degree weather. This week…not so much. In fact, snow is being forecast for the weekend. Ugh!

1-DSCN5490Oh well, I’m moving forward. Spring usually means pulling old treasures out of the barn for restyling and that’s what I’m doing.

This desk is what I pulled out when the weather was warm(er). It was unfinished and it had a few structure issues hardly worth mentioning. They were a quick fix.

2-DSCN5508I decided to go Americana, so I painted the entire desk blue. I thought the paint was navy blue, but it turned out to be more royal blue. No problem. I planned to age it.

3-DSCN5509I traced the writing surface of the desk on paper, then traced my crafty version of an American flag on the paper. When I was happy with the layout, I retraced the flag on the desk.

4-DSCN5517Then I painted. Painter’s tape helped keep the stripes crisp. A stencil was used for the star on the blue field.

5-DSCN5524Sanding distressed the desk surface and edges, and pecan stain aged the desk.

6-DSCN5523Enjoy!

Crocheted Owl Tutorial

They’re Back!

crochet owl 6I’m always amazed at how trends today are often trends of years past that have cycled back into popularity.

When were owls popular? Was it the 70s?

That trend wasn’t lost on my family. We had lots of owl knick-knacks decorating our home. My favorite was the ceramic owl cookie jar. The fat tummy of that owl held some really yummy cookie treats throughout my childhood.

So here’s my treat. I’m a giver again.

crochet owl 6The free tutorial for my crocheted owl can be found on FaveCrafts.

crochet owl 1He whips up super quick by crocheting each of his parts in the round. Best yet, he’s a great way to use up all your yarn scraps. Who says owls have to be natural colors?

You can find the tutorial here.

Enjoy!
