Restyled Scrap Wood Covered Table

6-DSCN5784Restyled Scrap Wood Covered Table

1-DSCN5765I’ve been shopping the barn again. My husband and I made these tables a few years ago to sell at a local garden store.

2-DSCN5767The cut out in the center is for a square planter box. We had these three tables left over, and since it had been a few years, it was time for a little restyling.

1-DSCN5810While I was in the barn, I gathered a pile of scrap wood. They had to be the same thickness, but a variety of widths.

3-DSCN5769I lined up several planks across the top of the table. They needed to fit from side to side without any hanging over the edges. My boards were a little shy of the width, so I separated them slightly. The gaps between the boards are hardly noticeable.

I cut each board to a length even with the table. With the help of wood glue and the power brad nail gun I had the top attached in no time.

4-DSCN5771I measured boards with the same thickness AND same width for the sides. I cut the first two boards equal to the measurements on opposite edges of the table and attached them in the same way as the top.

5-DSCN5773The remaining boards were measured and cut with the additional thickness measurement of the side boards. They were placed on the sides with the side ends overlapping the cut ends of the first two boards.

6-DSCN5784Then to marry it all together, I dry brushed everything…original table and scrap boards.

I’m finishing up the rest of the tables, but I already know square or rectangle tables are going to be on my garage sale list this summer. Think about it. You don’t have to worry about what the table looks like as long as it has good structural bones.

Wouldn’t a table with decorative legs look cute?

Enjoy!

More Graduation Decor and Inspiration

2-DSCN5792School Letter Decor Using Rulers

I’m trying to be super frugal with the decorations for my son’s graduation celebration because money will need to be spent on necessities like food and drinks.

9-DSCN5558A few weeks ago I shared my Rustic Ruler Star.

I still had rulers left over, so I decided to play with them. I wanted something to reflect the school…Winfield Vikings. A current school monogram has the “W” combined with the “V”. I decided to make ruler decor using this same image. Although some letters may be somewhat angular, I think just about any letter could be made with rulers.

1-DSCN5783I cut the pieces I would need for the WV and sanded them. Just like the star, I stained them with acrylic paint. I used blue to match the school.

The ruler pieces were drilled and attached with rusty baling wire.

I’m not making a lot of them…I’m thinking just a few to be placed here and there.

Which brings me to the really awesome inspiration of this post.

A few days ago when I posted about my balloon weights, Heather at Our Life In A Click posted a very nice comment and offered up the link to her daughter’s graduation party from last year.

Oh-My-Gosh!

1-Our Life In A Click-Vintage Picnic Graduation PartyOur Life In A Click

Her party ideas are fabulous! Take a moment to click on her blog’s name and feast your eyes on her creativity. I will be stalking visiting her site frequently in the next few weeks to copy gather inspiration for my son’s party. Ours will not be as big or elaborate, but I can dream…

I’m going to dig out my old typewriter. The bike that is already in the yard will be repositioned for the party.

The Jenga blocks guestbook is genius and the scrabble tile display is adorable. Oh, and Yard Twister? Too cute!

And, and, and…I made copies of my son’s senior pics for a photo garland. I chose them instead of school pics because he had just asked me what we were going to do with them. I really didn’t have an answer until I saw Heather’s idea.

Thank you, Heather!

Graduation Party Balloon Weights

07-DSCN5788Graduation Party Balloon Weights

Things are getting busy around here. My youngest will be graduating in a month and it seems like there is a “last” everything.

1-DSCN5736This weekend was the last prom.

I can’t even begin to list, or possibly keep straight, all the activities that have recently occurred and will continue to occur. I’m trying, but my son has an aversion to writing things down. We seem to be forever sucked into a last-minute cyclone.

Thankfully this isn’t our first rodeo. Two kids have already taken us on this ride before.

I’ve been preparing a few minor things for a celebration barbecue after the graduation ceremony. As usual, I am making decorations using junk things I already have on hand.

07-DSCN5788We will be displaying balloons on the tables so I whipped up a few graduation party balloon weights from scrap wood. Definitely nothing fancy, but I like them.

04-DSCN5779I cut 4x4s.

02-DSCN5775The year…

03-DSCN5777…and school initial stencils were cut using my Cricut.

09-DSCN5791The 4x4s were stained. You can’t really tell in these photos. :( Then I stenciled the year and initials onto the sides.

Eye screws were attached to the tops to tie the balloon strings to.

I kinda feel like I’m ahead of the game here. I’ve never had balloon weights before. I’m usually looking for a can or something to tie them to at the last minute.

Enjoy!

Bed Skirt From Vintage Tablecloths

5-DSCN5497Oops! I flew through this project without taking pictures. The ones I have are different shots of the finished skirt.

I could give you a bunch of excuses.

-My flash doesn’t work on my camera. True.

-It was a cloudy day. True.

-Batteries were exhausted in my camera. False.

-Project was too big. True, but that’s never stopped me before. :)

The truth is, I simply got in the groove with no set plan and forgot to grab my camera. Regardless, I’d like to tell you about it.

3-DSCN5495I hide store my yarn stash under our bed, but my bed is pretty high off the ground so the sides of the spread do not cover what I have stored. I’ve always wanted a bed skirt, but I built the bed from doors and decking boards. A purchased skirt wouldn’t cover the sides.

Light Bulb Moment!

I buy vintage linens at auction that I use for crafty projects. I had quite a few white tablecloths. They all had different decorative edges, but I made them work for me.

I mixed them up and used the decorative edges for the skirt. The best thing was I didn’t need to hem them. Yay, Me!

My foot board extends to the floor, so I only needed skirts on the sides.

1-DSCN5493Basic construction-Flat sheet of fabric covering the top of the box springs. The skirts were gathered and attached to both sides.

I love the shabby look!
