More Stenciled Signs

09-DSCN6138I love, love, love the way this sign turned out.

We were invited to the wedding of one of my son’s friends. My son was/is in the wedding, but the rest of us were unable to go as we have company for the weekend. I still wanted to send a special gift. The registry looked like it was pretty well taken care of by other guests, so I decided to come up with something on my own.

06-DSCN6129I used my Cricut and the fonts I had available to come up with my stencil. This actually took the longest to do.

Once it was cut, arranged and taped the way I wanted it…

07-DSCN6130…I made up my sign board. I had measured the stencil, so I had a general idea of the size I was going for. Scrounging through the wood scraps, I found enough pieces for the front…

08-DSCN6132and two braces for the back. I glued the braces and also connected them with wood screws. FYI: The sign size was approximately 19″ x 22″.

Once stenciled, I added two sawtooth hooks to the back braces and it was done.

10-DSCN6140I didn’t think wrapping paper was going to work for this gift. It was too heavy and I was sure the paper would be torn around the braces before it got to the wedding. Out came my stash of upholstery fabric and a custom tote was made. I, of course, had to add a little bit of shabby yummy-ness to tie the handles closed.

11-DSCN6102I made several of these signs as graduation gifts. The boards were horizontal door panels from a couple of old doors that were coming apart. I dry brushed the surfaces with flat white paint and made the stencil with my Cricut. The wire hanger is rusty baling wire.

Enjoy!

Graduation Sign From Campaign Sign

5-DSCN5974Graduation Decor From Campaign Sign

I live on rural property just off a highway that gets a lot of traffic everyday. We get many requests for posting campaign signs. No matter the party, we will usually approve the requests as long as the opposing parties respect the property (signs) of the other. This is not a political post. Absolutely not. I do not and will not talk politics. Enough said.

1-DSCN5961This sign is one that blew down during the last campaign. It was blown to an area of our yard that wasn’t noticeable during the fall, but now that spring is kinda here, we found it. I decided to recycle it for my son’s graduation party.

My son’s school colors are blue and white. Since I had a gallon of royal blue paint, I painted one side of the sign to cover up the campaign lettering. It took two coats. It probably could have used another, but for what I am going to use it for, I think two is kinda perfect.

DSCN0892I found a Dr. Seuss quote I liked, so I cut my own stencils using my Cricut and the Jubilee cartridge. I set the size at 5 inches and used ordinary card stock. You may remember my Rustic Stenciled Signs. The stencils were made in the same way. I connected the center of letters like the “O” using thin slivers of masking tape to bridge the center of the letter with the outside.

2-DSCN5965The rustic signs used one word. This was a little different. I was making an entire quote. I cut out each word individually (two if they were short words) so that each word had a common upper border.

4-DSCN5970Did I just confuse you? I kinda confused myself, so it’s okay to say “yes”. What I mean by common upper border, is that I was able to connect the words together with the top edge even. That way the line, or sentence, would be even. I used index cards to space each word. Masking tape was used to attach everything together.

Once I had each line created, I placed them on the sign. The lines were measured, spaced and taped.

5-DSCN5974When I finished stenciling the quote I felt it was a little sparse. It needed something more, so I added a border. Please excuse the shadow from the electrical line across the sign. I didn’t notice it while I was taking the photo. Oh well…just keeping it real. ;)

Enjoy!

Graduation Party Balloon Weights

07-DSCN5788Graduation Party Balloon Weights

Things are getting busy around here. My youngest will be graduating in a month and it seems like there is a “last” everything.

1-DSCN5736This weekend was the last prom.

I can’t even begin to list, or possibly keep straight, all the activities that have recently occurred and will continue to occur. I’m trying, but my son has an aversion to writing things down. We seem to be forever sucked into a last-minute cyclone.

Thankfully this isn’t our first rodeo. Two kids have already taken us on this ride before.

I’ve been preparing a few minor things for a celebration barbecue after the graduation ceremony. As usual, I am making decorations using junk things I already have on hand.

07-DSCN5788We will be displaying balloons on the tables so I whipped up a few graduation party balloon weights from scrap wood. Definitely nothing fancy, but I like them.

04-DSCN5779I cut 4x4s.

02-DSCN5775The year…

03-DSCN5777…and school initial stencils were cut using my Cricut.

09-DSCN5791The 4x4s were stained. You can’t really tell in these photos. :( Then I stenciled the year and initials onto the sides.

Eye screws were attached to the tops to tie the balloon strings to.

I kinda feel like I’m ahead of the game here. I’ve never had balloon weights before. I’m usually looking for a can or something to tie them to at the last minute.

Enjoy!

Rustic Western Cooler

7-DSCN5605Rustic Western Cooler

2-DSCN5591Another treasure from the barn. This was a score I had picked up a few years ago at a yard sale for $1. From the condition it looked like it had sat outside. The structure was good, but the outside surface was pretty rough and weathered.

1-DSCN5587Since the cooler inside looked like it had never been used I was sure it could be restyled into something special.

4-DSCN5593I painted the outside a light powder blue. I didn’t paint the inside lip or the bottom of the lid. Our summers are pretty humid, and I figure with the moisture that would be present from the cooler, any paint on the inside would most likely peel or cause the lid to stick.

Over the blue I randomly wiped on petroleum jelly.

5-DSCN5601A top coat of barn red was added. When it dried I wiped off the paint over the jelly. It wasn’t quite rustic enough for me yet, so I sanded over everything.

6-DSCN5602I found a medallion die on one of my Cricut cartridges. I cut it out as a stencil at 10 inches on a sheet of sticky backed vinyl. The stencil was painted with the same powder blue as the base coat.

7-DSCN5605Hmm…I don’t think I’m done. I’m not a big fan of the brass hardware (handles, hinges, etc). They need to come off and get their own transformation with some black paint.

Enjoy!

All That Glitters

VD Candle Holder-5

I love glitter!

Do you remember glitter art projects when you were a kid? My recollections are that glitter projects were always done at school, and back then there was only red, green, gold or silver glitter to choose from. I, of course, had to use them all.

It wasn’t until I became a mom that I realized the wisdom of a glitter-free home. ;) I felt the same way about play dough after trying to scrape the gooey or dry, crusty stuff out of carpet fibers. :(

But now (yippee!!) my boys are well past that stage and I can play work to my heart’s content. It was definitely worth the wait. There is now a rainbow of colors to choose from, there is a choice of textures, and the projects are much more sophisticated. Yep, that’s my story. It’s momma’s turn!

VD Candle Holder-1
I found a clear glass candle holder at the dollar store. Seriously, they have the best stuff to transform. You could also recycle one of those short, squatty olive jars.

I cut out little hearts on my Cricut Expression and stuck them to the candle holder. CHEAP TIP ALERT: Sign companies will sell scraps of sticky-backed vinyl for pennies. They usually have lots of colors to choose from (if you care what color it is) and it’s much cheaper than the sticky-backed vinyl you’re “supposed” to buy for your personal die-cutting machines.

VD Candle Holder-2
I covered the candle holder with decoupage medium.

VD Candle Holder-3
Since Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, out came the pink glitter.

Then I peeled off the hearts while the medium was still wet. Psst. You won’t be able to see the hearts on the outside of the holder, so locate them on the inside. Use a straight pin to pry up the edges. If the heart windows are kinda messy use a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol to clean your windows.

VD Candle Holder-4
I outlined each heart window with clear, dimensional glitter paint. It looks white when wet, but dries clear and…well,…glittery.

VD Candle Holder-5
Finishing touches included a ribbon tied around the neck and a tea light candle placed inside.

Enjoy!

For 2013 I am embracing the phrase “You never know if you don’t ask.”…So, if you enjoyed this post and this blog, would you consider following this blog?
