Restyled 9-Drawer Desk

Restyled 9-Drawer DeskRestyled 9-Drawer Desk

1-DSCF1571I found this little gem (ahem) on a recent junking weekend with my husband.

2-DSCF1570-001First off, the knobs had to go. They were obviously a replacement for missing handles…and they looked ridiculous in pairs on each drawer.

Next came sanding. It became very clear that all my sanding and patching techniques were not going to create a perfectly smooth surface. This desk had history it just wasn’t willing to give up. That’s okay. Even if I don’t know the life of my junking pieces, I kinda like them to have a few scars that can still tell a story…even if I have to imagine it.

3-DSCF1658The entire desk got a couple of coats of white paint. It really needed that fresh clean base. A lot of people probably would have stopped there, but it was boring. It also magnified every imperfection in the surface.

I decided on a layered, dry brushed technique. I dry brushed a layer of brown paint over the entire surface of the desk…and then I almost cried. It looked so ugly. I was sure I had made a mistake, but I continued. The next dry brushed layer was grey paint. Oh my! Did I lose my mind? I had to keep reminding myself it was just paint and could be painted over.

5-DSCF1695The next and final dry brushed layer was white paint. Woo Hoo!!! I could finally breathe. That final layer blended all the colors together and gave the surface a beautiful misty finish that I loved. I am so glad I didn’t turn back after adding the first layer. No guts, no glory!

7-DSCF1700I found some drawer handles in my hardware stash that fit perfectly. They were all sanded and got a makeover with the white paint.

6-DSCF1697Lining inserts cut from wallpaper provided the finishing touch for the drawers.

End Table/Coffee Table Shabby Chic Transformations

5-DSCN6964Shabby Chic End Table

1-DSCN6935This end table is similar to one I did a few months ago. Made from a portion of an old vanity, this one had only one drawer.

2-DSCN6940Unlike the other one, I didn’t need to add a backing to the top edge. I did, however, need to replace the side panels. They were just too warped to save. I used the drawer bottoms from a couple of drawers I didn’t need for my dresser/bench project.

3-DSCN6957The paint used was the same as the headboard peg rack.

5-DSCN6964It also got the same shabby chic sanding technique.

4-DSCN6960There wasn’t a handle, and finding one with matching screw holes proved fruitless. I went with a larger handle that had a back plate that would cover the old screw holes.

9-DSCN7001Shabby Chic Coffee Table

DeskThe coffee table was crafted from what I believe to be an old desk. It was rather tall, so I’m not a hundred percent sure of that.

6-DSCN6989The legs were shortened and everything was tightened up.

The only thing good about the drawers was their fronts, so I removed the box part of the drawers.

7-DSCN6994The paint treatment was the same as the end table and the peg rack…

8-DSCN6997…as well as the shabby chic sanding technique.

I then permanently attached the drawers to the drawer slots.

I had each piece priced separately at last weekend’s craft show, but a customer bought all three as a set. Score!

The entire show was a complete success.

Enjoy!

New Projects for Fall Craft Shows

03-DSCN6820I’ve been painting and restyling gazillions of things for a craft show this weekend.

17-DSCN6676Restyled Junk (Kro Crafts) will be at “Fall Into The Holidaze” at the fairgrounds in Winfield, Kansas this weekend. Admission is free and there is lots of convenient parking.

Lots of stuff came out of the barn for transformation.

08-DSCN6964This vanity/end table is similar to one I did a few months ago.

12-DSCN7000This desk was turned into a coffee table by shortening the legs.

06-DSCN6918The end table and the coffee table were both given the same paint treatment as the headboard peg rack.

16-DSCN5784I finished up a couple more wood scrap tables…

11-DSCN6985…and made several more scrap wood pumpkins.

13-DSCN7006After all the scrap wood projects, I had a lot more scraps of wood that I turned into stenciled signs for fall.

09-DSCN6973A little witchy wisdom 😉 on old chair seats.

15-DSCN7013Bunches of book pumpkins.

10-DSCN6984Jean pumpkins

02-DSCN6732Rats

04-DSCN6830My dresser bench is headed to the show…

05-DSCN6859…as well as my porch sitters…

07-DSCN6954…and a cute little desk.

14-DSCN7009This wheelbarrel (barrow?) needed a makeover and it got one. Wouldn’t it look cute filled with pumpkins or pots of mums?

I’ll have more on each of these projects in the coming weeks.

If you are in the Winfield, Kansas area Saturday, October 5, come by and say hello. I will be there off and on, but hubby has promised to man the booth while I clean house. Yes, when you are selling your home, cleaning is never ending…AND…as if a craft show isn’t enough, Sunday we will be having an open house.

Enjoy!

Americana Desk

6-DSCN5523It’s Spring!

Well, sorta. The calender says it’s spring, but Mother Nature can’t seem to make up her mind. Last week we actually had 80 degree weather. This week…not so much. In fact, snow is being forecast for the weekend. Ugh!

1-DSCN5490Oh well, I’m moving forward. Spring usually means pulling old treasures out of the barn for restyling and that’s what I’m doing.

This desk is what I pulled out when the weather was warm(er). It was unfinished and it had a few structure issues hardly worth mentioning. They were a quick fix.

2-DSCN5508I decided to go Americana, so I painted the entire desk blue. I thought the paint was navy blue, but it turned out to be more royal blue. No problem. I planned to age it.

3-DSCN5509I traced the writing surface of the desk on paper, then traced my crafty version of an American flag on the paper. When I was happy with the layout, I retraced the flag on the desk.

4-DSCN5517Then I painted. Painter’s tape helped keep the stripes crisp. A stencil was used for the star on the blue field.

5-DSCN5524Sanding distressed the desk surface and edges, and pecan stain aged the desk.

6-DSCN5523Enjoy!

Desk Curtain

5-DSCN5461Big doings in my craft room/office. I’ve been organizing. The room stores craft and office supplies, but there really isn’t that much room to actually do anything in there. One of my main issues is that it doesn’t have a door to close and hide the chaos and the door frame is extra wide.

1-DSCN5346I camouflage open shelving with an old door that I have leaning against the door frame and the shelf on the left of the photo. That helps a lot, but as you look straight into the room you see all my crap goodies under the desk.

Yep, my desk surface is an old door that I placed over two cabinets. And yes, that’s how wide the room is. :(

2-DSCN5447Determined not to spend any money (What else is new?), I dug through my fabric and settled on some upholstery fabric cuts. I didn’t have quite enough of one, so I chose two with similar colors and textures.

The curtain’s construction was pretty basic. I measured the width of the desk and doubled it, then the height and added 2 inches.

3-DSCN5452Once I pieced together a sheet of fabric using the measurements, I hemmed the sides and the bottom. The top was a selvage edge, so I cheated. I folded it over 1 inch and stitched a casing. I cut cording the same width as the desk and threaded it through the casing. A few stitches on each end of the casing kept it from slipping out.

4-DSCN5460Lastly, I tacked the curtain to the front of the desk.

Not exactly decorator quality, but it only took me half an hour and it serves the purpose I was striving for.
