I’ve been doing a lot of re-stocking in my Etsy shop lately. That has been one of my goals for 2015 and so far I have been able to keep up with it.

These listings just happen to be crochet items. Crochet just seems to draw me in when the weather is cold. Maybe it’s time to change it up a bit. Who knows, maybe a few projects using different mediums will cause the weather to shift toward spring. ;0

Strippy Fabric Posy

13-DSCN6523When the summer days get too hot to do anything outside, or if we’re lucky enough to have rain, I like to craft small, quick projects in the house. This week I’ve been working on fabric posies. They’re great craft show fillers. They can be used to decorate gift packaging, home decor items, clothing, or glue a pin on the back to create a brooch.

07-DSCN6290I use tea-stained sheets and cotton tablecloths, but you could also purchase and tea stain muslin. My staining process for this batch of flowers was done with instant tea. I boiled a soup pot of tea, added my fabric and then let it steep until it cooled. I squeeze out the excess tea and hang it to dry. You can rinse it if you like, but I find that too much tea rinses out for my liking.

Rip a strip of fabric with a width the size desired for your posy diameter by a yard long. For instance, the posy shown is 4 inches in diameter. I ripped a strip 4 inches wide by 36 inches long.

08-DSCN6291Fold the strip in half with the long edges together. Use your favorite gathering stitch technique along the raw edge.

09-DSCN6295Cut 1/2-inch-wide strips from the fold to the gathering stitch. These are your petals. Adjust the width if you prefer wider or narrower petals.

10-DSCN6297Gather the edge until the strip measures approximately 1 1/2 feet long.

12-DSCN6302Cut a circle of white canvas for the back of the flower. The circle serves as your base for building the posy.

11-DSCN6299Starting on the outer edge of the circle, hot glue the gathered edge of the strip in a spiral until you reach the center. Trim off excess if necessary.

15-DSCN6527Decorate the center with bits and bobs of your choice.
